Exemplary patent: US5336099 – Media connector interface for use with a PCMCIA-architecture communications card.

NB: this is one of the few (or only) Ethernet or phone connection solutions that can handle low space requirements.  This is the key feature of this patent set. For instance, if someone wanted to put an RJ45 Ethernet jack on a cell phone, they would need this technology because there is no space on this shell of a cell phone to accommodate the connection.
