Software Imaging Halftoning
Opportunity to Purchase Software Imaging Patent in Halftoning Technology
Our client Software Imaging Limited has asked us to find a buyer for patents pertaining to Halftoning Technology. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain several US, Japan & EU patents in Halftoning Technology.
Halftoning Portfolio: This lot contains patents relating to stochastic screening and patterning, including patterning for use with laser printers. The inventions in this lot relate to methods for generating dot patterns which are not discernible to the human eye but appear as a continuous tone image. The patents also cover the inclusion of the output from these methods in printer drivers or printer driver software development kits, and the deployment of those drivers on end user printers or copiers.
Some exemplary patents include: US6833933, US7025515, and EP1650955.
The Technology:
The technique of halftoning is fundamental to binary printing processes – ie those where the marking engine can either mark the page at 100% or not at all. It allows a variety of tones to be produced, ranging from varying intensities of text to full colour photographs. The overwhelming majority of printers found in homes and offices exploit halftoning to deliver high quality continuous tone printing at an affordable price. Commercial printing processes such as offset press also use halftoning. Achieving high quality output from halftoning is not simple and many techniques are covered by patents. The patents in this lot provide a broad set of methods which offer a market leading combination of high quality and speed for both ink jet and laser print engines.
The Market:
Halftoning technology is applicable to home and office printers and copiers, and commercial printing processes using digital technology, where it is critical to print quality and can materially impact print speed. In addition, the halftoning techniques for generating dot or hole patterns which are not discernible to the human eye can be exploited in areas such as digital watermarking, printer consumables saving software, medical & scientific imaging, fax machines, video games on smartphones, digital cameras, and other handheld consumer products.
In addition the Patterning patents for use on laser printers are applicable to any marking engine which has problems with reliably placing single dots, potentially enabling cheaper marking engines to be manufactured with the patents used to compensate
The Opportunity:
The successful buyer of these patents and technology will garner the following benefits:
- Market leading combination of high quality and speed for both inkjet and laser print engines in mono and colour
- Potential basis for a family of printer consumables saving software products
- Applications to exploit in digital watermarking, medical & scientific imaging, fax machines, video games on smartphones, and digital cameras
- Wide enforcement opportunities because of the extensive patent claims
Non-binding offers from interested parties to acquire these patents and/or technology are expected upon review.
