Overview:
The invention relates to using an existing phone number as an identifier for a VoIP endpoint, where the existing phone number remains active in the PSTN domain (telecom world) in a “normal” way. While also being used as the identifier in a (parallel) VoIP domain. In this model, the VoIP service “overlays” the number.

A key aspect of the invention is that it enables the use of the real telephone number in the VoIP domain without requiring any cooperation of the PSTN domain (telecom companies/networks).

The Technology:
The invention enables a model in which calls to a given number, originating from a participating end-point can be delivered over VoIP, bypassing the PSTN network. Calls to the same number that originate from a non-participating endpoint are directed over the PSTN as usual, and the idea is both types of calls arrive at the same end-point (transparently), with all users dialing the same number to reach the end-point. The invention relates not directly to the making of calls, but to the means to ”overlay” the real telephone number, to map it to a VoIP end-point in a verified, consistent manner. The invention covers doing so in a fully automated manner as well as in several customer-assisted manners (using Voice response or customer calls or a web interface).
